mike asked:

I have started to play Squash and while also keeping up running. I was wondering which would do more calorie burning an hour of high tempo squash or 5-6 (8min/mile). I seem to be underpressure with the squash but find the running easier even with speedwork.

I would of thought running would of been better, your moving at a constant rate. You burn around 600 calories for 45 minutes of steady jogging…you have incline’s with pavements etc

can tell you, based on age and weight, how many calories you burn doing various activities.

The running every time. Squash is an explosive form of exercise and you have periods of rest in between when the play is more tactical than power driven. While an 8 minute mile is quite good in this context, try to speed up to a 7 minute mile and this will burn more calories. Remember to hydrate at regular intervals.

squash i guess because we need to move our body to play it plus in squash you againts other people, so needs more energy.

you burn 100 calories per mile of running, its more if you are working harder/like a work out.

Well, according to the list I have just looked at, a 155lb person burns 855 calories an hour playing squash and 880 running (see ) so pretty much the same in terms of energy used.

The running will be easier becaue the effort is constant over a longer period (say you burn 14 calories running in 10 minutes, thats 14 a minute, but in squash the ball might only be in play for 7 of those minutes - so each minute you are playing you are using 20 calories - a more concentrated effort)

Depending on your goals for runing and squash I think that the 2 would complement each other well - the squash is like a “fartlek” session (lots of short burst of speed and then a rest) and the running gives you a stamina for the squash games
